As investors we find ourselves in a still-evolving and dynamic investing environment following the events of the past 18 months. But as we look to 2010 and beyond, we can see signs of economic life in an improving global landscape, including a string of encouraging data over the past few months that has sustained the positive run in the markets.
Brent Jones, SVP and Portfolio Manager, and Ping Zhou, SVP, Managing Director and Portfolio Manager, have written a two-part white paper series on the outlook for Sub-Saharan Africa. The first, titled Africa on the Path to Progress, reviews the overall infrastructure deficiencies in the region, the size and sources of investment flows in recent years and the significant gap between actual and needed finance for infrastructure. Part two of the series, titled The Growing Role of New Infrastructure Financiers in Africa, explores the role of new infrastructure financiers from other developing economies in helping Africa meet its investment needs.

While we are now beginning to see some early signs of economic recovery, U.S. growth is still expected to be slow well into 2010. There has been a flurry of policies, proposed reforms, and fiscal and monetary actions in an attempt to put the economy back on stable ground and quell the financial crisis and deepest recession since the Great Depression. But the questions surrounding whether we have seen the bottom, as well as what type of recovery we actually are in, continue to be debated. In this paper, I will examine the efficacy of the fiscal, monetary and other policies adopted to overcome the crisis, and evaluate the reforms now being proposed to prevent future crises and put the economy back on a sound growth path.
The global economy is once again expanding, and financial conditions have significantly improved. Led by a resurgent Asia, emerging economies are further ahead on the road to recovery and leading the way out of the global downturn. In our view, emerging markets withstood the financial crisis much better than most investors expected. This has helped to boost inflows and valuations. In this update, we revisit the case for emerging markets and provide our outlook for valuations.
